Services provided to UNIWA students

Several important services are provided to the students of the UNIWA both by the University Institution itself and by the MSc in Artificial Intelligence and Deep Learning. Detailed information about these services can be found on the websites of the MSc, the Department and the University. Below is the list of services provided, and the relevant links where students can find out about them.

Department of Financial Support for Food – Student Housing

According to the current legislation, students of the University of West Attica have the opportunity to apply for free meals. Students who are not entitled to free meals have the possibility to be fed in the student restaurants by paying a low daily fee for a full menu (lunch and dinner).

The University of West Attica provides accommodation for eligible students.

More detailed information on the application procedure, as well as the necessary documents, is provided at the beginning of each academic year by the Student Services Department.

Health Services

According to the provisions of Law 4452/15-02-2017 (A’ 17), article 31, par. 3 “undergraduate and postgraduate students and doctoral candidates who have no other medical and hospital care are entitled to full medical and hospital care in the National Health System (NHS) with coverage of the relevant costs by the National Organization for the Provision of Health Services (EOPYY), in accordance with article 33 of Law No. 4368/2016 (A’ 83)” only by using their AMKA.

Department of Social Care, Counselling and Psychological Support

The above department is responsible for issues related to the psychosocial support of the members of the educational community of the University of West Attica (students, teaching and administrative staff).

Department of Career Counselling & Guidance

The main task of the above department is to prepare and support students and graduates of the Institution in their professional careers by offering them information on postgraduate studies and scholarships, informing them about training programmes and jobs in the public and private sector and enhancing the individual skills needed to explore and find employment.

Career, Liaision & Innovation UNIWA Office

A Liaison Office operates at UNIWA, whose mission is to offer high quality services both to the educational community and to private and public sector enterprises, organisations, local government services and collective bodies in order to achieve the following objectives: a) the liaison and mediation between the Institution and education, research, production and service providers, communication with the students and graduates of the Institution and b) the promotion of innovation and entrepreneurship.

Equal Access Unit for People with Disabilities and People with Special Educational Needs

The Equal Access Unit for persons with disabilities and persons with special educational needs is designated as the Foundation’s reference point for monitoring the implementation of the relevant provisions of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and for drafting and submitting to the Individual Reference Point of the Ministry of Education and Religious Affairs of article 71 of Law No. 4488/2017 (A’ 137) proposals and legislative arrangements for the best implementation of the Convention in the universities and an annual progress report and the consultation of members of the academic community with disabilities on the above issues. The unit shall be staffed preferably by scientific staff with experience in physical accessibility, digital accessibility and disability issues, otherwise by staff who are appropriately trained in the above issues.

The University of West Attica takes care to support students who, for different reasons (students with disabilities, students from vulnerable social groups, students with low incomes) are prevented from participating equally in the academic activities required by their studies and completing them by obtaining their degree.

The supervising department of the MSc, in accordance with the Internal Regulations of the University and other applicable provisions, appoints Professors/advisors of students with special needs and the services of the Institution, in cooperation with the Professors/advisors, undertake actions to:

  • continuous registration of target group students and their specific needs
  • assessment of individual functioning/study difficulties – identification and adaptation of assistive technologies
  • counselling and psychological support
  • accessible digital learning materials – accessible institutional website
  • volunteering – training – awareness-raising
  • accessibility of premises
  • financial support for disadvantaged students to combat drop-outs

Academic Advisors

Upon registration, each student is assigned an academic advisor, who is a faculty member of the University of West Attica who teaches at the MSc programme. The academic advisor monitors and collaborates on a regular basis with the student throughout the course of study on issues of education, career guidance and integration into the academic community.

Student Advocate

The University of West Attica operates the institution of the Student Advocate in accordance with the Internal Regulations of the University and other applicable provisions.

Within the framework of his/her responsibilities, the Student Advocate investigates cases on his/her own initiative or following a student’s report and mediates with the competent bodies for their resolution. It is part of his/her competence to request from the services of the institution any information, document or other evidence concerning the case, to examine persons, to conduct an autopsy and to order expert opinions. If he finds that in a particular case the law is not being observed, that there is evidence of maladministration or that the proper functioning of the institution is being disturbed, he shall draw up a report, which he shall communicate to the professor concerned or to the competent administrative department and to the student who submitted the report, and shall mediate in every appropriate way to resolve the problem. The Student Advocate may, by an act of the Student Advocate, place on file a report that is found to be manifestly vague, unfounded or unsubstantiated, and, if he or she finds that there is evidence of disciplinary misconduct, forward the case to the appropriate disciplinary body.

For all postgraduate students of the MSc, an academic ID card with the right to a reduced ticket is provided, for the issuance of which they are informed in detail about all instructions by the MSc Secretariat.

The MSc may grant scholarships, both contributory and non-reimbursable, or awards for excellence to full-time students, according to the decision of the Curriculum Commitee. Scholarships shall be awarded on the basis of objective, academic, economic and social criteria, which may be, indicatively, academic, economic and social, as referred to in Article 14 of the Internal Regulations of the MSc.

Furthermore, the MSc may grant scholarships to MSc students in order to support the preparation of projects abroad, following the request of the MSc student and his/her evaluation by the HPS, following the procedure described in Article 14 of the Internal Regulations of the MSc.

The University of West Attica has two gyms, one in the Aigaleo Park Campus and the other in the Ancient Eleonas Campus.The gyms are fully equipped with fitness equipment, while the staff of the gyms guides and supervises every interested visitor.
The aim of the gyms is to offer a wide range of sports programmes and activities, which will ensure the participants quality of life, as well as mental and physical health.

The Department of Network Operations Center is responsible for the support of all online services provided at the University of West Attica. The Network Operations Center provides a range of electronic voice and data services to members of the university community.

Educational Process

E-class

The e-class is an integrated e-course management system and supports the asynchronous e-learning service at UNIWA without restrictions and commitments. The service can be accessed using a simple web-browser without the requirement of specialized technical knowledge.

Electronic Secretariat Services

Through the electronic secretariat information system, each lecturer has access to his/her classroom for reviewing the class, sending messages to registered students and managing grades. In addition, the e-secretariat system has statistics such as pass rates and grade distribution which are collected and reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

Student Register

In relation to student matters, the Department’s Secretariat uses the software for the student record book, which has been purchased by the University for the use of all its Departments by students and lecturers. The whole electronic process of assigning, monitoring, and completing the teaching of courses is done through the information system of the electronic secretariat to which the Department Secretariat has access.

Institutional Repository “Polynoe”

The Institutional Repository “Polynoe” (“Polynoe”) of the University of West Attica is an infrastructure of organized digital content which was created with the aim of collecting, documenting and promoting the scientific production of the Foundation. In a systematic way, following international practice and standards, documents from the entire educational research and administrative activity of the Institution, as well as special collections when deemed appropriate, are registered in this system.

This material is classified in collections by subject or thematic category and for each case of material a digital entry is created with appropriate descriptive metadata, which is linked to the corresponding digital file deposited. The posting of the MSc Thesis in a specific format is necessary in order to complete the declaration of the students as graduates on the basis of other requirements.

Access to equipment for the needs of the work

In order to serve the needs of students for the preparation of assignments, the MSc provides access to technological equipment and hardware and software infrastructure, as well as resources in virtualised infrastructures. Through this access, students are able to create and run artificial intelligence and deep learning models. Information on the availability of the infrastructure per course, how to apply for and access it, as well as its operating procedures is provided by the course lecturers, and in the case of theses by the supervisor.
